Case Study: Bob Jones University – Student Health

Background

Bob Jones University (BJU) is a private evangelical university located in Greenville, South Carolina. The university has approximately 3,000 students, including about 2,477 undergraduates. U.S. News & World Report has recognized BJU among the Top Best Regional Universities in the South, ranking it #17 in 2025 and highlighting its strong value and social mobility programs. BJU’s mission emphasizes educating students for meaningful impact while maintaining its conservative Christian heritage.

Student health services on campus include an on‑site nurse available Monday–Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The school advises students who become ill to contact Student Health Services or make their own appointments with local providers. Residence hall students can access free telehealth visits through the MomentMD app, and the university’s health services fee grants access to a telehealth provider with oversight from Student Health Services so that students can obtain care 24/7 at no additional cost. For international students, BJU explains that MomentMD offers 24/7 telehealth services with digital health tools that fit busy student schedules.

Challenges

As the undergraduate population grew, BJU’s student health clinic faced several obstacles:

  • Limited on‑campus resources. A single nurse staffed the Student Health Services office during weekday business hours. Outside of these hours, students relied on urgent care centers or emergency rooms, which created delays and higher costs.
  • Inadequate after‑hours coverage. Before MomentMD, early implementations often lacked reliable after‑hours response. Students needing care on evenings, weekends and holidays experienced long wait times and inconsistent follow‑ups.
  • Language and cultural barriers. BJU serves students from across the U.S. and around the world. International students needed clinicians who could communicate in multiple languages and understand diverse cultural norms.
  • Fragmented technology. Without integrated devices, appointments sometimes fell short of a physical examination. Students with ear or respiratory complaints still had to travel to off‑campus clinics for diagnostic tests.
  • Growing expectations. The global pandemic normalized telemedicine. Students accustomed to convenient digital services expected faster response times, comprehensive care and seamless integration with campus health records. Meeting these expectations required more robust infrastructure than the existing system provided.

Our Solution

To address these challenges, BJU partnered with MomentMD to redesign its student health offering. Building on our experience providing nationwide clinical education and telemedicine services, we delivered a comprehensive solution tailored to the needs of BJU’s undergraduate population:

  1. Continuous coverage. MomentMD now provides 24/7/365 telemedicine coverage for both primary and acute care. Students can connect with licensed clinicians via video at any time, eliminating the need to wait until the clinic reopens or to visit urgent care centers.
  2. Multilingual provider network. We tapped into our national network of board‑certified physicians and nurse practitioners who speak multiple languages. Students can request a provider fluent in their preferred language, ensuring that international students feel understood and supported.
  3. Remote physical examination devices. We supplied BJU’s campus with digital diagnostic tools: stethoscopes, otoscopes and connected vital sign monitors, that integrate with our telehealth platform. During virtual visits, clinicians can guide students in using these devices to capture heart and lung sounds, ear images and other exam findings.
  4. Integrated documentation and quality assurance. All encounters occur within the MomentMD platform, enabling Student Health Services to monitor visit quality, track utilization and maintain compliance.
  5. Ongoing innovation. We continue to enhance BJU’s student health program by introducing artificial intelligence tools to meet students’ expectations for modern healthcare.

Results & Impact

The partnership between BJU and MomentMD has delivered measurable benefits:

  • Reliable access to care. Students no longer wait for clinic hours to receive care; they can connect with a clinician within minutes. Surveys conducted by MomentMD show high satisfaction with the availability and convenience of the service.
  • Reduced urgent‑care visits. By meeting most needs virtually, BJU has seen a decline in off‑campus urgent care visits and emergency room trips, saving students time and money. The ability to access telehealth visits 24/7 at no additional cost keeps care affordable and students in classrooms.
  • Equitable care for international students. Multilingual providers and culturally sensitive clinicians have improved engagement and health outcomes among international students.
  • Enhanced clinical quality. Remote exam devices allow clinicians to conduct thorough assessments during virtual visits, mirroring the hands‑on experience of an in‑person appointment. This approach aligns with our evidence that remote physical exam devices and AI tools improve learning and care quality.

Lessons Learned & Next Steps

BJU’s experience underscores several insights for institutions seeking to enhance student health services:

  • Telehealth expands access without sacrificing quality. Virtual encounters connect students with diverse providers while maintaining patient‑centred care. For BJU, round‑the‑clock telemedicine has become a core component of campus health.
  • Language matters. Providing multilingual clinicians removes barriers for international students and fosters trust. Universities with diverse populations should prioritise linguistic and cultural competency.
  • Technology must include physical examination tools. Remote exam devices bridge the gap between virtual and in‑person care. By equipping students with digital stethoscopes and otoscopes, telehealth visits become more comprehensive.
  • Reliability builds trust. Students quickly adopt telemedicine when they know they can reach a provider any time of day or night. Continuous availability sets a high bar for service quality.

Through this partnership, Bob Jones University demonstrates that a small campus can deliver comprehensive, culturally responsive healthcare by leveraging telemedicine. As universities nationwide reevaluate student health models, BJU’s success illustrates how digital platforms like MomentMD can transform campus health services, ensuring that every student, regardless of schedule or background, receives timely, high‑quality care.
