Case Study: The University of Pikeville

Background

The University of Pikeville is a leader in osteopathic medical education, dedicated to training compassionate, skilled, and well-rounded physicians. Their Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) program prepares students for hands-on patient care in various specialties.

Challenge

Like many medical schools, they face a growing set of challenges, including:

  • Securing diverse, high-quality clinical rotations to meet program requirements.
  • Shortage of available preceptors in rural and underserved areas.
  • Limited access to diverse clinical experiences, particularly in psychiatry and women’s health.
  • Administrative burden on faculty and staff to source, vet, and manage preceptors.

Solution

MomentMD partnered with the University of Pikeville to provide a technology-driven preceptor network, allowing their students to complete clinical rotations without traditional geographic and logistical barriers.

Using our national preceptor network, we matched students with preceptors across Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Women’s Health. As part of our vetting process, all MomentMD Preceptors are board-certified and have telehealth experience, making rotations more flexible and accessible for students. In addition to verification, MomentMD oversaw all contracting and scheduling, reducing administrative burden, and streamlined student-preceptor communication, documentation, and rotation tracking.

Results

  • Increased Preceptor Availability: Pikeville students secured rotations in all three critical specialties, preventing potential graduation delays.
  • Flexible, High-Quality Clinical Training: The telehealth rotations allowed students to gain comprehensive clinical experience without relocating.
  • Streamlined Administrative Processes: Faculty and staff no longer needed to source preceptors manually, saving time and resources.
  • Future-Ready Medical Training: Pikeville now has a scalable and sustainable preceptor network that can grow alongside its student body.

This partnership highlighted the power of digital clinical training—a combination of telehealth and in-person exposure creates flexibility without sacrificing quality. Moving forward, we look forward to evolving this partnership into a multi-year preceptor pipeline, ensuring future students have consistent, high-quality rotations for the next class of healthcare professionals.
