For many of us, the holidays represent a time to reflect and celebrate the people, places, and things we’re most grateful for. Often, this naturally extends to family and friends–and for good reason. A group frequently neglected? The hundreds of thousands of healthcare workers who spend the holidays away from their families to take care of our own.
Mia George, our newest Student Spotlight, was one such healthcare worker. Born and raised on the island of Dominica, she always dreamed of a career in medicine. In 2019, she arrived in Louisiana to attend Grambling State University and received her degree in Nursing after transitioning from Pre-Med. She is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Nursing Education at Grambling and works on the campus health care center, where she spent the holiday weekend taking care of patients.
We met Mia through our partnership with Grambling, which pairs nursing students with qualified MomentMD preceptors who guide them through virtual clinical rotations. Of the experience, Mia noted she really noticed how healthcare professionals present themselves to patients affects them and how they respond, noting the power they hold in their actions and words–even the smallest remark can help carry them through the day.
Like all of our student spotlights, we asked Mia if she had any advice for fellow students on their rotation journeys. Her answer?
“Just be open to the idea. Don’t let anxiety take control of life, be grounded in your emotions. Be open and humble. Be open to learning and change.”
May we all take her advice into our own lives and careers.
